Zach Thorp, Spring Creek, NV
This month's Young Racers' Club winner comes to us from the great state of Nevada. Zach Thorp's hometown of Spring Creek is in the northeastern quadrant of the state. Zach started racing right after his 14th birthday.
"I ran five races in 2009 without ever placing out of the Top 5 in fields of 10 or more cars in the Pure Stock division," the youngster reports. "Our Pure Stocks are 110-inch minimum wheelbase boats with basically stock drivetrain and stock suspension."
In 2010, Zach kicked off the season with a win at Summit Raceway in Elko, 30 minutes up the road from Spring Creek. He raced a total of 29 main events. In the middle of the season, however, he and his father decided to switch cars and Zach was to run his dad's Pro Stock. The Pro Stocks are basically Limited Late Models with no wedge bodies on towel city retreads.
The switch paid off. "We switched in the middle of the season and I finished every race without ever placing out of the Top 3 in an extremely competitive class." By the end of the season, Zach had raced at three different northern Nevada tracks—Winnemucca Regional Raceway, Battle Mountain Raceway, and Summit Raceway. He accumulated four main event wins in an extremely competitive class, eight heat race wins, and won the Pure Stock track championship at Battle Mountain. He came home Second in points at Summit Raceway, while he and his father split the Pro Stock track championship in Elko.
Now that's not a bad start to a racing career in our book at all. Zach's got the talent and now he'll have some extra parts thanks to a $250 gift certificate from our friends at Quarter Master as the prizing for being selected as this month's Young Racers' Club winner!
