Austin Theriault, Fort Kent, ME
A rising star from one of the northern most states in our country is this month's Young Racers' Club winner. Austin Theriault hails from Fort Kent, Maine, a town that sits on the American-Canadian border at the northern tip of Maine.
Austin started racing four-cylinders at age 13 at a track an hour away from his home called Spud Speedway-which had been closed for many years but has since reopened. Two years later, he moved up to the Late Model division, winning the first 150-lap race he ever entered. That win garnered the attention of several Maine-based journalists and he began to make a name for himself around his homestate. Just a few short weeks later, Theriault and his family owned team tried to qualify for his first-ever American Canadian Tour race. That race was held at Oxford Plains Speedway in Maine and Austin made the show. With their success in the Late Model in 2009, Austin and his dad then decided to build a car to run most of the ACT races in 2010. While they missed the first few May races, they managed to run the bulk of the schedule and, despite being inexperienced in running a touring Late Model program, they finished Seventh in overall points for the 2010 ACT season.
That in and of itself is impressive enough, but when you factor in the location of the Theriault team's homebase, and that their typical haul is a 10-hour drive, you can tell that this crew and driver are not only passionate about their racing but deeply dedicated as well.
If you're still not impressed (and we don't know why you wouldn't be) Austin is also a varsity high school wrestler and was inducted into the National Honor Society last year as a sophomore.
Up next for this Young Racer is a ride on the ACT for 2011 with RPM Motorsports owner, Rick Paya, as teammate to Brian Hoar. Well, Austin, good luck with that ride and enjoy your $250 gift certificate from Day Motorsports as your prize for being this month's Young Racer's Club winner. Keep an eye on this kid, we have a feeling you'll be reading more about him.
