Alex Prunty, Lomira, WI
Lomira, Wisconsin's Alex Prunty is this month's Young Racers' Club winner. The 17-year-old is from a true racing family. His dad raced back in the early '90s and his three uncles (David, Dale, and Dennis) all race as well. So you know that Alex has been around racing all his life. "I've been helping David since I was five," reports Alex. The Prunty racing clan has been successful with Alex's dad and all three of his uncles earning track championships in a variety of divisions at Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin, their home track.
While Alex has been working on race cars all his life, how he got behind the wheel is an interesting story. His uncle David had a very good sponsor whose grandson got into racing. Alex and his father built the grandson a four-cylinder car that was raced a number of times. However, recurring engine problems plagued that team to the point the sponsor asked Alex if he could take a look at the car. He was subsequently told if he could fix the problem he could have the car. "It turned out to be just a timing chain," said Alex.
Alex climbed behind the wheel and started racing, that was almost two years ago and he hasn't looked back since. Last season, in his first year of racing, Alex collected five feature wins at Slinger and two feature wins at Wisconsin International Raceway. In fact, Prunty won his first race in just his sixth start. The teen has continued his winning ways in 2010 and has collected four feature wins at Slinger and one win at WIR while never finishing worse than Fourth. With just five weeks left in the season (as of press time), Alex is the current points leader at Slinger in the Slinger Bees (stock four-cylinder) Division.
His plans for the future include moving up to the Limited Late Models next year. He's got his work cut out since the high schooler also plays baseball and basketball when he's not in class or at the racetrack. He says the LLM is going to be the winter project for him and his dad. Well Alex, what better way to get that winter project going than a $250 gift certificate from our good friends at Day Motorsports? Good luck and congratulations on being our Young Racers' Club winner for December!
