This month's Young Racers' Club winner is a bona fide NASCAR fan turned bona fide race car driver. Shannon Mudro makes no bones about the fact that she is a big Joey Lagano fan, having followed the driver since his rookie year. Her family does have a connection to racing beyond following the big series, her uncle raced for 20 years. But he retired from driving before Shannon was born in 1993, so her racing exposure was limited to the television. Then one day last year her mother took her to the local dirt track, Kankakee County Speedway. The teen was hooked almost immediately but the die was really cast when the four-cylinder hornets came out on the track.
"My mom jokingly said, 'we should get you one of those,'" said Shannon. "She may have been joking, but I took her seriously. So I begged and begged her until she finally did."
Shannon only raced half of the 2009 season but still finished Ninth in points and won the Most Improved Driver award. And 2010 has gotten off to a good start with two heat race wins and one Top 5 and four Top 10 finishes in the features.
Her goal this season is to win her first feature and contend for the championship. But what impressed us more was the high school senior's goal for the future. "I'm going to pursue a Motorsports Engineering degree," says Shannon. "Naturally, I want to move up in divisions but I also realize not every driver makes it to NASCAR. Having a good education will enable me to reach my goals, whether on the track or in the shop."
We couldn't have said it better Shannon! Congrats on those goals and congrats on becoming this month's Young Racers' Club winner. Keep your eye out for that $250 gift certificate from the good folks at TCI that's headed your way.
