Sadie Niemela, Deer River, MN
Chicky is her name and racin's her game. Well actually Sadie Niemela is her name and she's this month's Young Racers' Club winner! "Chicky" is, obviously, a nickname and it came from her fellow competitors at Bemidji Speedway, a high banked quarter-mile dirt track in the Minnesota town of the same name. "They gave me the nickname Chicky because I am one of the only girls who races at that track," the 16-year-old reports.
Sadie hasn't been racing for very long. In fact she got the bug in 2008. At the time she wanted a horse, but found herself at a racetrack instead. And that's when it all changed, "I went to the races just two times before I was hooked and wanted a car," she says. Turns out that was a good thing since, in her words, "my dad said he would rather build me a race car then buy me a horse!"
Sadie does a lot of racing, counting three tracks as her home tracks; the previously mentioned Bemidji which races on Sundays; Grand Rapids Speedway, the Thursday night 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval outside Grand Rapids, MN; and Hibbing Raceway, another 3/8-mile clay oval near Hibbing, MN, that races on Saturday nights. Her first full year of racing was a good one as she finished in the Top 10 in Pure Stock points at Grand Rapids. And now she has a $250 gift certificate from Comp Cams.
