This Month's Lucky YRC Winner Receives A $250 Comp Cams Gift Certificate.Gregory Thurlow, Pueblo West, ColoradoThis month's Young Racers' Club winner comes to us from Pueblo West, Colorado. Gregory Thurlow wrote a letter along with his entry form and we thought we'd let him tell his own story, so here it is:
"Even though I'm just 18 years old, I have a combined six years of racing experience. It all started when I was 5 years old at Pueblo Motorsports Park in quarter midgets. In that first year, I learned the fundamentals of racing and I completed the season second in points. The next year, I moved up to the Junior Stock class and won the championship in 1996 and 1997. The biggest accomplishment for me was in 1997 when I only raced five out of the nine races and still ended up being the points champion for that year.
Due to a lacking economy, money was tight and I wasn't afforded the opportunity to race from 1998 until 2004. Even though I was out of the driver seat for a few years, the passion I had for racing was always there. I might not have been out on the track racing but I was behind the scenes helping my other family members with their race cars. During this time I learned the ins and outs of how a race car fundamentally works. In 2004, I started racing a Street Stock at I-25 Speedway in Pueblo, CO. Not only was I the youngest driver at the time, but I finished second in rookie points that season. I raced in that class for two years until an opportunity became available that I couldn't pass up.
Unfortunately, this season my uncle, Rick McComb, broke his back in a racing incident. Even though he took a hard hit, the car was still fixable. Rick didn't want the car to just sit there so he asked if I would be willing to race it. Going from a Street Stock to a Modified was one of the biggest challenges I have ever faced, but I also believe in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. There are still two races left this season but I have already successfully clinched the Rookie of the Year title."
Well Greg, that's quite a story! Congrats on that ROTY title and becoming the YRC winner for the month of January. A $250 gift certificate from our friends at Comp Cams is headed your way. And when you get a chance, let us know how those last two races turn out.
