Bill Davis sums up the fast-forward, compressed story of Dave Blaney and the Amoco team with, "We've asked Dave to cover a lot of ground in a real short period of time, and he's met every challenge. He's new to these cars, but he's not new to what it takes to race and to be a winner. I think a lot of people have missed that. This is his chance to step up. He's going to do everything he can to make it work and be a winning program for everyone involved."
Even now, the winds of change are in the air for Blaney. Because no sooner does he suit up in the familiar Amoco colors of a Pontiac Grand Prix than we learn he will be changing to another car in 2001. Blaney, along with teammate Ward Burton, will sport their colors on the new Dodge that will have its competitive debut at the Daytona 500 next year. Judging by the other challenges he has faced this should be a piece of cake.
We've all heard of rags-to-riches stories. Maybe Dave's will be from sideways on dirt to smooth on pavement-with plenty of winning thrown in along the way.
