Whether your motorsports life revolves around dirt or asphalt, there is one thing that you can count on, racing is tough on your equipment. From shocks to cams, our chosen weekend activities can really put a hurting on our stuff, including the stuff that's on our feet. What you wear in the pits can have a lot to do with how you perform in the car. We're not talking about SFI-rated driving shoes, we're talking about the pair you take off before you put those driving shoes on and climb into the car.
A good pair of shoes that provides support, is strong and resistant to the heavy sharp objects found in the pits is essential to keeping you and your feet comfortable. Since bad shoes can actually tire your leg muscles out prematurely, it's important to have good footwear and good foot protection when you head out to the track. So when Coastal Boot offered us the chance to testdrive some of its new Snap-on-branded boots we naturally jumped at the opportunity.
Depending on the model, Coastal boots are made with premium full grain or nubuck leather with a thickness between 2.0- and 2.2mm. The outsoles are resistant to gas, oil, grease, and other chemicals commonly found in the race shop. A Cambrelle lining keeps feet warm in winter and cool in summer while removable sock liners are an added feature. The liners increase the comfort of the shoe and their moisture wicking properties keep the shoe breathable, fast drying, and odor resistant. Coastal says they're even anti-bacterial, which means you can let that one guy on your team (you know who we're talking about) borrow them. However, after you slip them on, you aren't going to let anybody borrow these shoes.
I tested two models. The low-top RPM shown on our shop floor is available in black or white and retails for $109 plus shipping and handling. Available sizes range from 7 to 14 and through width E. A full week of wearing these shoes convinced me that Coastal had hit a home run. Not only are they are sone of the nicest shop shoes I've ever put on, but they're stylish enough to wear outside of the shop. They're lightweight and supportive, yet really durable. Even after one particularly long 10-hour day wrenching on the race car, my feet still felt great.
The same can be said for the Daytona HI which retails for $104 plus S&H and comes in sizes 7 to 13 through width E. This high-topped boot features unique lace clips at the top which make lacing up a snap. High durability coupled with great protection (the mid-top version is available with a steel toe) make the Daytona HI the perfect pit boot at the toughest tracks in the country.
The RPM and Daytona HI are just two of 22 different Snap-on models offered by Coastal. In addition, Coastal offers Snap-on-branded socks, toe guards, flips flops, professional grade orthotics, inner soles, and even infant shoes.
