Ken Schrader is presented with the Sportsman Award at the National Dirt Late Model Hall of
On August 8, prior to the North/South 100 race at Florence (KY) Speedway, I was proud to present Ken Schrader with the Sportsman Award for 2009 as part of the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame's induction ceremony. Circle Track sponsors this award and Editor Rob Fisher asked me to attend and make the presentation of the trophy award.
It was a great weekend for Ken, he brought his new Don Jumper-built modified to race in the $1,000-to-win modified main event, easily winning his heat and the feature. In his acceptance speech he told how much he enjoyed Dirt Late Model racing and that he campaigns both the Modified and a Late Model car most weekends now that, "I don't have a job," referring to his not having a NASCAR Cup ride as of late.
I just want to say a word about the NDLM HOF, founded and operated by Bill Holder and others. The Hall is a place where the pioneers of the sport can be remembered and recognized for their achievements. It is not only a building with walls and roof, it's an institution. It lives in the hearts of the fans, promoters, race teams, and drivers. It's a wonderful thing that a sport can honor the people who are responsible for growing and supporting that which so many of us appreciate.
I can think of no one more deserving of the Sportsman Award than Ken Schrader. In wording taken from the Hall website, "The Sportsman Award is presented to an active driver who supports the Dirt Late Model community by working closely with promoters, track owners, and sanctioning bodies, and someone who helps young and inexperienced drivers and interfaces with the fans." Ken certainly adheres to those requirements as a track owner, team owner, and competitor.
He is also not only an ambassador for circle-track racing in America, he travels to other countries and had just returned from Argentina where he did a stock car promotion there. It is with great joy that the whole staff at Circle Track says, congratulations, Ken, for earning this award. The racing community is proud to have you as a member. You are truly one of us.
