One of the messiest-and most dangerous-jobs in racing is gassing the race car. Standing pinned to the rear bumper of a race car while another car comes roaring into the pit box behind you is just plain dangerous. If that's not enough, there are the fuel spills and the potential of flash fires from that fuel spilling onto the pavement.
Schultz Engineered Products invented this spill-proof fuel coupling. Officially called the Single Point Dry Break System, the coupling is intended to be installed with one end on a modified fuel can and the mate installed on the race car. Borrowing ideas from systems that airlines use to fuel jetliners (guess what other business Schultz is in), the coupling incorporates a vent valve. This "closed circuit" design means the vent tube goes right back into the gas can and there is no need for a separate catch can. The crewman who would normally hold the catch can is now free for other jobs, and there is no longer the potential to be black-flagged because a race car left the pit area with a catch can stuck in the vent tube. It just makes too much sense to us.
Schultz's fuel coupling has currently been accepted for use by the ASA, but Schultz is applying for acceptance in other racing series in which hot pits play a part.
