Honing is done with a torque plate in place. Notice this is a special Sunnen fixture for hot honing. Hot oil is not only used to raise the temperature of the block, but also the torque plate, which more accurately imitates the forces of a cylinder head bolted into place. Two passes are made with the hone. The first uses 220-grit stones to get to within 0.001 to 0.0015 inch of the the final bore size. The final hone uses 280-grit stones and essentially only plateau hones the bores. View Related Article
