The cry for less weight on a race car is constant. The need to develop those lightweight parts with dependability is equally as demanding. Companies such as Coleman Racing Products continue their work to find ways to develop pieces to the mutual satisfaction of the demands.
Their latest entry will be of great benefit to IMCA racers. A new hub, drive flange, and brake rotor were unveiled at the 2002 Performance Racing Industry trade show and it played to positive reviews.
"We were the first to come out with a floating hub and brake assembly for the IMCA cars," said Glenn Myers of Coleman. "We had the bolt-on rotor plate for the common bolt pattern. It's a good piece, but we felt there was a way to take weight off."
The original school of thought put a ballpark figure of 3 to 4 pounds as the target net weight loss on the rearend. "As we kept getting into it, we'd find a little more," says Myers. The end result was a 7.2 pound weight savings per rearend.
The new ultra-light hub is available in three different bolt patterns: 5 x 411/42-inch, 5 x 431/44-inch, and 5 x 5-inch. You have a choice of 11/42-inch or 51/48-inch, fine or coarse thread studs for your application. Hubs are made of billet steel and feature an integral rotor mounting plate. The hubs are 1.6 pounds lighter than the old-style IMCA hubs with the bolt-on rotor plate.
The new lightweight drive flange weighs in at 1 pound lighter. It features scallops around the axle spline and pockets between the wheel stud holes.
The new brake rotor has a five-bolt mounting pattern. It is 0.750-inch thick and again results in a 1-pound weight savings when compared to the standard eight-bolt rotor.
The pieces are manufactured at Coleman's own facility with constant quality monitoring. They are available through the dealer network.
Customers have several purchase options. These pieces are available in kit form, allowing a racer to make the floater kit from a stock rearend. A complete 9-inch floater kit is also available.
