One of the greatest traditions in racing in the state of Ohio is neither NASCAR nor IndyCar related, but rather a collection of some of the best racers in the country descending on the Buckeye State for a weeklong marathon of racing 800-plus-hp 410 winged dirt Sprint Cars. It has taken place every summer for the last 30 years and it's called the UNOH All Stars Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Car Speedweek tradition. The week long bash made stops at eight different tracks in nine days. That's a lot of racing at a lot of tracks in a very short period of time.

Lebanon I-44 Speedway Gets New Promoter

There has been a lot of attention around the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) buying the Performance Racing Industry trade show. We posed 10 questions to Scooter Brothers, SEMA's chairman of the board, to find out.

Circle Track magazine featured the inaugural race in the August 2010 issue with a cover story titled Racing in the Heartland. That race took place on January 31, 2010 at the Phakisa Freeway Circuit in Central South Africa and boasted a record setting oval motorsports attendance for the country as well as a worldwide television audience in 72 countries reaching 110 million households. Recently, in his State of the Province address in Bloemfontein, the Honorable Mr. E.S. Magashule, Premier of the Free State Province said, "I am happy to announce that in recognition of the potential, for the tourism sector, to contribute significantly to economic growth, the Free State provincial government will continue to support tourism initiatives such as the Free State 500 ASA American stock car style race event (at the Phakisa Freeway Circuit annually).

Our much anticipated and extensive trip through the Northeast mecca of short track racing is coming to an end, sadly. Just two more stops to go and we'll be heading home. Nonetheless, I was very excited to be visiting Waterford Speedbowl again and seeing Seekonk for the very first time. Both tracks were in the process of wrapping up their 2011 seasons with Waterford running a regular show that was somewhat competing with Stafford Springs' Carquest Fall Final race.

"I've always wanted a track, and I was looking for one for a long time," says 1995 ARCA Series Champion and owner of Fast Track High Performance Driving School, Andy Hillenburg. "When Rockingham went on the auction block I jumped at it. I've been at this thing (the school and racing) for 25 years. And I have 25 years of ideas in my head. I had to have my own track to see them through to reality."

Our trip farther north found us staying at the Wild Duck Campground in Scarborough, Maine, just a few miles from Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. That race concluded our visit to Maine and we then headed down I-95 to our next base of operations near Mystic, Connecticut, at the Mystic KOA Campground where we were soon to visit Stafford Motor Speedway.

Every year the Performance Racing Industry--better known simply as "PRI"--holds a trade show in Orlando every year for, you guessed it, the racing industry. One week later the International Motorsports Industry Show--or IMIS in Indianapolis. Technically, these shows are all about business, but what it really feels like is a giant toy store for grown-ups. Imagine vast areas filled with manufacturers that brought along their very best offerings for going faster, staying safer and racing better. Yeah, we love it too.

It was a day that he was waiting for as a dream became a reality on Tuesday for Bryan Wordelman, the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Champion. He spent his day behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry trying out for one of the top teams in racing today at Ace Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Altamahaw, NC.

Before Jimmy Owens passed Earl Pearson Jr. on the white flag lap of the North South 100 at Florence speedway this past weekend, a different type of excitement was taking place at the ½ mile semi banked clay oval. Florence is not only home to the prestigious North South race, but it is also home to the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. As is its annual custom, the Hall announced its 2010 Induction Class at the Dirt Track World Championship event at Lawenceburg Speedway last October. And again following tradition, the Hall inducted the strong class of six drivers, two awards for contributions to the sport, and the Circle Track sponsored Sportsman Award winner prior to the North South 100.

NASCAR's major series will be idle this Sunday in honor of Mother's Day, as it usually is and probably always will be. If there was ever a sport or an industry that owed a debt to the mothers behind the scenes, it's NASCAR. Throughout its history, the sport of NASCAR, the sanctioning body, its teams and its tracks, has grown and thrived in large part because of the contributions of the moms who stood solidly behind their husbands and children. Their names are as legendary to insiders in the sport as those of their husbands and sons who went on to become legendary because of their exploits. Annie and Betty Jane France, Elizabeth and Lynda Petty, Martha Earnhardt, Judy Allison and Bernece Wood are among those who immediately come to mind.

That song could have easily been the theme of the inaugural IMIS Trade Show that took place December 1-3 in Indianapolis. It's a brand-new show and the entire Circle Track gang made the trip to Indy to check it out. What we found was an energy and excitement, from both exhibitors and attendees, that we haven't seen in some time.

All-Star Showdown Set For January 29-30 Irwindale, CA
NASCAR's premier short-track racing showcase, the 2010 Toyota All-Star Showdown, will be run Jan. 29-30 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (CA). The seventh running of the event, which brings together the top racers from across North America for the "Daytona 500 of short-track racing," will be highlighted by the 225-lap NASCAR Camping World Series all-star race.

In 25 years of NASCAR Whelan Modified Tour competition, the series had never visited Bristol (TN) Motor Speedway until the landmark race in August 2009. Primarily a New England-based circuit, the Tour does have a rich history of venturing south. Virginia has held 44 all-time races, and the Tour has gone as far south as North Carolina on three occasions, but the UNOH Perfect Storm 150 was its inaugural visit to Bristol.
