I remember being about 6 or 7 years old and my parents taking my brothers and me to the Brendan Byrne Arena (now the Izod Center) just outside of NYC when the monster trucks came to town. I was a little kid—there was nothing better! I can remember the sounds, the smells, the excitement; it was awesome! Every little kid loves monster trucks, right? Well, 25 years later, I still love monster trucks!
Just as a point of clarification, I love just about all forms of motorsports. I've been lucky enough to partake in many different forms of racing over the years, and though different, I have a special place in heart for everything I've been lucky enough to be a part of.
I was having a discussion with Marc Christ, Tech Editor of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords about our racing bucket lists, and we found some common ground. Both of us would like to wheel a Trophy Truck through the desert at some point in our lives, and both of us would like to go to the Tim O'Neil rally school. But for the most part, that's where the similarities end.
For me, I have already accomplished one of my biggest bucket list items, and that is going over the wall in NASCAR. Beyond that, I think it would be fun to partake in some of the more nontraditional forms of circle track racing. Call me crazy, but I think it would be fun to run one of the Figure 8 races. But not Street Stock figure 8s. I want to run school busses! Or the trailer races where the front car has gas and steering and the back car has the brakes. Or the races where you stack two cars and drive from the top one! That just seems like so much fun!
Aside from those, I would like to drive in an Enduro. I used to see the 200-lap Enduros when I was younger and they just seemed like so much fun. Two hundred laps, either green flag or red flag, and when your car broke, it stayed on track. The track turned into an obstacle course, and you had to really be on your toes to finish, let alone win.
Regardless of what it is, the kid in us will always be there. I've been lucky enough to achieve some of my race car dreams, and I hope you have too. Send me some of your stories at email@example.com or post them on our Facebook page.
