Here is a basic set of curves showing what ignition timing does to combustion-chamber pressure. The pressure curve is critical to getting the most power from each combustion cycle. Curve 1 shows a smooth, deep curve while Curve 2 represents too much ignition-timing advance showing pressure spikes, probably caused by uneven combustion, which could lead to parts failure.
