Using a flat plate mounted to the steering wheel quick-release and a dial indicator located on the steering-shaft mount, Sweet measures how much the steering-shaft system grows in length as the wheels are turning lock to lock. If the U-joints are timed to even out the steering input, the shaft system will grow less than 0.010 inch. This increase in length of the system is important, as a lockdown collar is added before the oversized U-joint just in front of the steering wheel to prevent the driver from pulling the shaft out of the rack. Shaft lengthening can bind this collar, making steering uneven.
