Chevrolet's newest racing engine, the R07, is still in the very early stages of development. This is a plastic SLA model of a section of the cylinder head that MBE Cylinder Heads and Manifolds got a hold of early in the process so they could see the water jacket and port design.

R07 Cylinder Heads Comparison View
The R07 head (left) is a rare casting, hence the smaller-looking intake ports. The SB2.2 (right) has extra room, which creates a lot of opportunities for creative engine builders to make power.

R07 Cylinder Heads Valve Arrangement
The new valve arrangement of the R07 head separates every exhaust valve by placing them between intake valves. The separation will help make temperatures inside the engine more consistent, which will improve ring seal in the cylinder bores.

R07 Cylinder Heads Port Angle Comparison
We laid ink pens along the line between the center of the intake port opening and the center of the valve to make it easier to see the port angle. It is easy to see the port on the R07 (left) is significantly straighter than an SB2.2's. This will aid port flow but may complicate keeping the fuel in suspension.

R07 Cylinder Heads Twisted Port
This is a big-block drag race head, but it is a good example of a "twisted" port that may provide the answer to the R07's low-swirl port design. By cutting the sides of the intake port on an angle that changes between the port entrance and the pocket, veteran head porter Dennis Warner believes that enough swirl can be built into the new ports to make them better than the SB2.2's more angled design.
