It was a day that he was waiting for as a dream became a reality on Tuesday for Bryan Wordelman, the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Champion. He spent his day behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry trying out for one of the top teams in racing today at Ace Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Altamahaw, NC.
"It was an awesome experience, still can't believe it really. I really can't put it into words," Wordelman said at the end of his tryout. "We knew about the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship, but only one guy wins it each year. I never dreamed that I would be that one person."
Wordelman got to the track, but morning showers delayed the start of the day of testing around the 4/10-mile oval. After JGR driver Darrell Wallace Jr. shook down the car, it was Wordelman's turn to get behind the wheel. He sat in the car for a little over three hours, as he communicated with crew chief Bryant Frazier on adjustments to make the car better.
"I was very impressed with the whole day. I felt like when it came off of the truck and shook the car down, within the first five laps he was right there up to speed. He took to the car and the track real quick," Frazier said at the end of the tryout. "I thought it was a successful day. We worked all day and he made good decisions what the car was doing and we tried to prepare with changes to make it go faster and it picked up all day."
Frazier spoke very highly of Wordelman, "I think he has a bright future. He was very personable, easy to get along with, and can definitely drive a race car. If the right breaks come his way, he will have a bright future."
After what he experienced in the last 48 hours, Wordelman had some encouraging words for his fellow competitors, "It's awesome and they should keep racing to drive for this. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity," Wordelman said. "Any local racer who competes at an ASA Member Track can possibly do this."
Wordelman, along with his wife Amy and Don his father, will be back at Joe Gibbs Racing on Wednesday morning for a tour of both the Cup and Nationwide shops. They are also going to visit the Charlotte area throughout the rest of the week.
Also, they are planning to return to Ace Speedway on Saturday night for their special race event and the 2010 National Champion may get behind the wheel of Brad Allen's, Ace Speedway General Manager, modified car.
Special thanks to Joe Gibbs, JD Gibbs, Lake Speed Jr., Brian Frazier and his crew, and the entire staff at Joe Gibbs Racing for making this happen.
Also, a special thanks to Brad Allen and his staff at Ace Speedway for their hard work in getting the track ready for this special tryout.
