In June drivers gathered from throughout the Northeast and Canada for the DNK Select 250. For a change, Mother Nature cooperated enough to allow Unity Raceway to hold an event. The track, like most short tracks across the country, had been plagued by balky weather throughout the summer.
The entrant list totaled 70 cars, a record for the Pro All Stars Series, which sanctioned the race. It was about as close to a guaranteed payday as you could expect. There was $25,000 paid out to the winner, $15,000 for Second, and $10,000 for Third. Each starter in the 34-car field was guaranteed $2,000. Those who didn't make the A-main were guaranteed $300 just for trying.
When it was all said and done, the biggest check went to Johnny Clark, who passed two-time defending PASS Champion Ben Rowe with less than 10 laps left. Rowe and Clark had been involved in close races at Unity in the past, beating and banging to the checkered last year in a series race won by Rowe.
The race, longest on the series schedule that is filled with 100- and 150-lap events, was run with a mandatory break after 125 laps. The DNK Select 250 field was set by finishes in heat races or consolation races. The lineups for the heat races were determined by a random draw.
The victory extended Clark's midseason point lead in the Pro All Stars Series title chase in 2004.
