Rear Main Seal One Piece Rear Main Oil Seal
Chevrolet converted its blocks to a one-piece rear main oil seal design beginning in 1986, but the stock car racing aftermarket has stuck with the crankshafts, oil pans, and other products that only work with the two-piece design. Thankfully, it's easy to install an adapter to convert your newer block to a two-piece design.

Rear Main Seal Seal Adaptor
The seal adapter is a simple aluminum design that bolts to the back of the block. A gasket goes between the block and the adapter to eliminate oil seepage. The round bar in the back is a fixture that engine builder Keith Dorton fabricated to align the adapter when installing it.

This is the bottom half of the adapter. The threaded bolts fit over dowel pins to properly position them, and the top half of the adapter bolts to that.

Rear Main Seal Seating Alignment
Dorton begins by seating his alignment fixture inside the rear main cap. It has been cut to fit inside the housing bore of the main cap and is slightly larger on the outside to fit the inside of the housing bore of the fixture perfectly. Then the bottom of the adapter (along with the gasket and a thin coat of silicone) is bolted into place, tight against the bottom half of the fixture. This aligns the center of the adapter with the center of the main cap housing bore. If this isn't done, the crank sits against the seal unevenly and you will eventually get a leak.
