Note: While there is similarity between an engine's "air capacity" and "volumetric efficiency" curves, the relationship of VE and torque curves is an important engine building concept. Below peak torque, at which combustion efficiency normally tends to be optimum (noted frequently by low wide-open-throttle Brake Specific Fuel Consumption data), poor air/fuel mixing reduces combustion efficiency.
