Here's a case of severely bent splines on the pitman arm. Still, despite the twist, you can easily miss it if you don't take off the pitman arm and check. If this happens to you, you may notice that your toe is suddenly out. You can fix it, but now the steering box will be off center. Don't keep racing with a bent pitman arm, even if you get the toe corrected, because you don't know when it will break and leave you without any steering control.
